We are experts in our fields, collaborators in others, and excited by discovery.

Position summary

We are seeking an opto-mechanical systems R&D engineer to join a dynamic team that is expanding the boundaries of 3D imaging and ranging technologies using computational optics approaches. As a member of a small team, you will have the opportunity to shape the company’s R&D and product development activities. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking self-starter who will be responsible for building prototype systems, characterizing opto-mechanical system performance, and actively participating in R&D design and transfer to manufacturing. Applicants should have good working knowledge of mechanical systems design, 3D modeling, parts and assembly drawings, build and evaluation of mechanical subsystems and systems, and design for manufacturing.

Primary responsibilities

  • Participate in development of product design requirements, recommend designs, determine design feasibility, and evaluate design alternatives.
  • Verify that design meets system requirements via analyses, simulations, and experiments.

Key technical qualifications

  • Well versed in a broad range of mechanical design concepts including dimensioning and tolerancing, material selection, FEA, 3D modeling, CAD drawings.
  • Hands-on experience assembling/fabricating prototype fixtures and parts using a range of materials, and setting up and characterizing the performance of high-precision opto-mechanical systems.
  • Experience creating module and sub-assembly drawings, manufacturing instructions, and builds for production.
  • Able to rapidly prototype with 3D printed parts.
  • High level of proficiency in SolidWorks (preferred) or other CAD software.

Background qualifications

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, or related field, or master’s degree with 3+ years or BS degree with 5+ years of relevant work experience with opto-mechanical systems.
  • Highly self-motivated and a solid team player with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional technical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and record keeping, clear information presentation skills.
  • Quick learner, able and interested in acquiring new skills and competences.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with internal and external teams.
  • Experience in microscopy instrumentation (preferred).
