Our mission is to deliver widespread access to novel imaging techniques by engineering cutting-edge products that spark innovation and uncover new science. We are experts in our fields, collaborators in others, and excited by discovery.
Position overview
We are seeking an opto-mechanical engineering intern to join a dynamic team that is using advanced computational optics approaches to expand the boundaries of 3D imaging, inspection, and metrology. As a member of a small team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the company’s R&D and product development activities. You will be mentored by our experienced engineers in your technical and professional development.
The ideal candidate for this position is a forward-thinking self-starter who is eager to dive into key initiatives for the company, including designing and building prototype systems and characterizing opto-mechanical performance. Applicants should have good working knowledge of 3DCAD modeling, optics principles, and optical alignment techniques, as well as typical characterization equipment such as profilometers, wavefront sensors, etc.
Primary responsibilities
- Participate in concept development, design of mechanical components, implementation of opto-mechanical prototypes, and performance characterization.
- Verify that designs meet system requirements via opto-mechanical setup and experimentation.
- Analyze measurement data to validate system performance and present results for team review.
Your technical experience
- Experienced in 3D CAD modeling such as SolidWorks or Inventor (SolidWorks preferred), CAD drawings, 3D printing and materials selection.
- Well-versed in a broad range of optical concepts including geometrical optics, physical optics, Fourier optics, diffractive optics, and illumination.
- Experienced in optical setup and alignment.
- Familiar with opto-mechanical system characterization and alignment tools such as wavefront sensors, spatial light modulators, profilometers, etc.
- Data analysis experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, or R (MATLAB preferred).
Your background
- Working toward a PhD in optical physics or related field (preferred), or master’s degree. BS degree with relevant work experience with opto-mechanical systems will be considered.
- Highly self-motivated and a solid team player with excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and record keeping, clear information presentation skills.
- Quick learner and interested in acquiring new skills and competencies.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with internal and external teams.
- Knowledge of DHO’s engineered PSF core technologies and related technologies (preferred).
- Experience in microscopy instrumentation (preferred).
